KS1 SPaG Foundations

Build strong writing skills from the very beginning!

Our KS1 SPaG Foundations helps children develop confidence with Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPaG) through fun, engaging weekly lessons designed to build confidence and skills. 

Each small-group lesson combines games, speaking activities, sentence building, mini investigations and practical writing tasks so that grammar becomes something children understand and use naturally—not something they simply memorise.

The course has been carefully designed so learners can join at any point during the year, with each six-week block focusing on a different area of SPaG while continually revisiting and reinforcing previous learning.

By the end of the course, learners will be writing with greater confidence, using punctuation more accurately, choosing better vocabulary and understanding how sentences work.

There are 6 blocks per year (term time), with 6 lessons in each block.

1 YEAR 

BLOCK 1: Building Great SentencesCapital letters, full stops, finger spaces, simple sentence structure, nouns, verbs, oral sentence rehearsal

BLOCK 2: Word DetectiveCommon and proper nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs (simple), conjunctions (and, but, because, so), vocabulary choices

BLOCK 3: Punctuation PowerQuestion marks, exclamation marks, commas in lists, apostrophes for contraction and possession (intro), speech bubbles, proofreading

BLOCK 4: Grammar BuildersTenses, pronouns, expanded noun phrases, conjunctions, sentence types, making sentences more interesting

BLOCK 5: Super SpellingPhonics revision, common exception words, prefixes & suffixes (KS1), plurals, contractions, spelling patterns, editing

BLOCK 6:Amazing WritersApplying SPaG through stories, letters, instructions, recounts and simple non-fiction, editing and improving writing
