Cambridge IGCSE Marine Science (0697)
Explore our oceans, discover extraordinary marine life and understand the science behind one of the most important environments on Earth.
Cambridge IGCSE Marine Science is a fascinating science qualification for learners interested in oceans, marine life, ecosystems and the environment.
Across the course, learners will investigate everything from tectonic plates, ocean currents and seawater chemistry to coral reefs, marine organisms, food webs, pollution and conservation.
But this isn't simply about learning facts about the ocean. Learners will develop real scientific skills: interpreting data, analysing evidence, understanding investigations, solving problems and applying their knowledge to unfamiliar marine situations.
This live small-tutor group works through the Cambridge IGCSE Marine Science (0697) syllabus while gradually developing the knowledge, practical understanding and exam skills needed for the qualification.
Independent study, practical activities and exam practice will also be required between live lessons.
Assessment
Learners taking Cambridge IGCSE Marine Science (0697) complete two externally assessed examination papers:
Paper 1 – Theory & Data Handling
1 hour 45 minutes | 80 marks | 50%
Paper 2 – Theory & Practical Skills
1 hour 45 minutes | 80 marks | 50%
There is no separate coursework component, but practical scientific skills are an important part of the course and are assessed through Paper 2.

As we’re launching later than planned, this first block is a shorter 3-week block. You’ll only pay for these three lessons, and our usual 6-week blocks will follow. We can’t wait to welcome you!

Week 1
Planet Ocean
Earth's structure; crust, mantle and core; Earth's place in the Solar System; introduction to the World Ocean.
Week 4
Mapping the Ocean Floor
The five oceans; latitude and longitude; continental shelf and slope, abyssal plains, mid-ocean ridges, trenches and volcanic islands.
Week 2
A Moving Planet
Tectonic plates, convection currents, continental movement and the development of today's oceans.
Week 5
Tides
High and low tides, tidal amplitude, spring and neap tides and the gravitational influence of the Moon and Sun.
Week 3
Earthquakes, Volcanoes & Tsunamis
Convergent, divergent and transform boundaries; formation and impacts of earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis.
Week 6
Ocean Currents & Gyres
Causes of ocean currents, the five major gyres, movement of water around the World Ocean and rip currents.
