About the class
KS1 English
Build confident readers, writers and communicators with our engaging KS1 English Group!
These small-group lessons develop the essential reading, writing, spelling and communication skills children need through stories, games, discussion, creative activities and practical challenges.
From learning to decode words and understand stories to writing sentences, exploring grammar and developing vocabulary, learners will steadily build confidence while developing a genuine love of reading and writing.
*There are 6 blocks per year (term time) with 6 lessons in each block.
1 Year
BLOCK 1 – Phonics & Word Reading
Phoneme-grapheme correspondence, blending, segmenting, decoding unfamiliar words, common exception words, reading accuracy and confidence.

BLOCK 2 – Reading Comprehension
Retrieval, inference, prediction, sequencing, explaining answers, discussing vocabulary and making connections.

Characters, settings, story structure, sequencing ideas, simple planning, descriptive vocabulary and writing complete sentences.

Traditional tales, fairy tales, retelling stories, repeated language, comparing stories, speaking and drama.

Common exception words, spelling patterns, plurals, contractions, prefixes and suffixes, homophones and proofreading.

Capital letters, full stops, question marks, exclamation marks, nouns, verbs, adjectives, conjunctions, simple tenses and sentence construction.

Week 6
Week 6 – Reading Adventure!
Applying blending, segmenting, tricky words and decoding skills together, Reading stories and simple texts with growing confidence + Celebrating progress as confident young readers.
