About the class
The Hive Newspaper
Calling all young reporters, reviewers, critics, journalists, interviewers, photographers, artists, chefs and puzzle-makers!
Join the team behind The Hive Newspaper — a learner-created publication packed with stories, interviews, reviews, opinions, discoveries, recommendations, puzzles and everything happening across The Hive - published every 12-weeks.
Learners can choose a role that suits them... they might investigate a story, interview someone interesting, review a book or film, write a sports or science feature, write a plan and budget for a visit somewhere cool in London, become an arts critic, create a quiz, take photographs, share a recipe or craft tutorial, design a page or help edit the final edition.
Each week, the team will meet online to share updates, ideas, choose stories, develop their pieces and work together towards the next edition both online and in their own time.
Learners have a genuine and rapidly growing audience of over 400 readers for their work, while naturally building writing, communication, research, questioning, critical thinking, teamwork and media-literacy skills.

As we’re launching later than planned, this first block is a shorter 3-week block. You’ll only pay for these three lessons, and our usual 6-week blocks will follow. We can’t wait to welcome you!

What you'll learn this block
Week 1
Welcome to the Newsroom
Meet the team, explore the different newsroom roles and discover how everyone will work together to create the first edition of The Hive Newspaper.
Home Assignment: Find 2–3 ideas for a story, review, interview, feature or other contribution you'd like to pitch.
Week 4
Interviews & Investigations
Look at how to find reliable information, ask great questions and strengthen different types of newspaper contributions, with individual support for each learner's assignment.
Optional Home Assignment: Complete any remaining research or interviews and create a first draft or version of your contribution.
Week 2
Story Conference
Pitch ideas to the newsroom, hear other reporters' ideas and agree individual roles, stories and assignments for the edition.
Home Assignment: Start your assignment by researching, arranging an interview, trying what you're reviewing, gathering information, taking photographs or developing your idea.
Week 5
First Draft Conference
Bring work into the newsroom for constructive editorial feedback and look at how headlines, structure, images, captions and strong editing can make each contribution better.
Optional Home Assignment: Improve your contribution using the feedback and add any missing elements such as images, captions, facts or headlines.
Week 3
Newsroom Check-In
Report back on progress, share discoveries and problems, get feedback from the team and decide what you need to do next.
Optional Home Assignment: Continue your assignment using the newsroom feedback — research, interview, investigate, photograph, create or start writing.
Week 6
Halfway Newsroom
Review the newspaper as a whole, celebrate what's taking shape, identify what's still missing and decide what the newsroom needs during the second half of production.
Home Assignment: Complete your main contribution or take on a smaller additional assignment to help fill a gap in the newspaper.
7. Editorial Meeting
Bring the newsroom back together to review progress, look at how the edition is developing and agree what each reporter, reviewer, interviewer, critic or creative contributor needs to complete next.
Home Assignment: Continue or complete your contribution, working towards the deadline agreed with the editorial team.
8. Story Workshop
Work on individual contributions with focused editorial support, whether that means strengthening an article, sharpening a review, improving an interview, choosing images or developing a creative feature.
Home Assignment: Make the agreed improvements and prepare a near-final version of your contribution.
9. What Are We Missing?
Look at the newspaper as a whole and identify the finishing touches it needs — from short news stories and recommendations to puzzles, illustrations, photographs, captions and fact boxes.
Home Assignment: Create or help complete one of the additional elements needed for the final edition.
10. Copy Desk
Become the newspaper's editing team: check facts, polish writing, proofread contributions and make sure headlines, captions and information are clear and publication-ready.
Home Assignment: Make any final corrections to your work and submit your finished contribution.
11. Final Editorial Meeting
Preview the assembled newspaper, review pages as a team and make the final editorial decisions before the edition goes to press.
Optional Home Assignment: Complete any last corrections or additions requested by the editorial team.
12. Press Day!
Reveal the finished Hive Newspaper, celebrate everyone's contributions and reflect on what the team created before starting to think about the next edition.
Optional Home Assignment: Share the newspaper, gather some reader feedback and start spotting possible stories for the next edition.

2. Live lesson places are limited to 10 learners per lesson to ensure the best learning experience. If a place becomes available, it will be bookable here on a first come first served basis.
